When will Fastly support JPEG XL image format?
JPEG XL is a new royalty-free image codec targeting the image quality as found on the web, providing about 60% size savings when compared to original JPEG at the same perceptual quality, while supporting modern features like HDR, animation, alpha channel, lossless JPEG recompression, lossless and progressive modes. It is based on Google's PIK and Cloudinary's FUIF, and is in the final steps of standardization with ISO.
Implementations have landed in Chromium and Firefox und will soon start to ship. Cloudinary is already supporting JPEG XL in its product since November 2020.
The reference implementation of the codec can be found here.
When will Fastly Image Optimization support encoding images in JPEG XL format?

Hello Manuel,
Thank you for your inquiry. Our Image Optimization team is aware of the new image format, we do not currently have an ETA for when Image Optimization will support this format. When we do begin supporting JPEG XL, it will be included in the list of supported formats in this doc:https://developer.fastly.com/reference/io/format/

Hello Smitha
Thank you for your quick reply. It’s good to know that the team has this on the radar. My team is a customer of fastly. We would love to see support for JPEG XL. We would especially benefit of the better handling of text in infographics in jpegxl. We use fastly’s image optimization service to optimize our raster infographics. Unfortunately all existing image formats are not delivering satisfying results today.
Kind regards,
Manuel
